Domain expiry and renewal: auto-renew, grace period and redemption
288 viewsA domain isn't bought forever: you register it for 1 or more years and must renew it before it expires. If it expires, your website and email stop working, and after a while someone else may take the domain.
Where to see when it expires
- Domains → My Domains: the Expiry Date column. The Expiring soon filter shows those expiring within 30 days.
- On the domain page (Manage), in the Domain Details card: expiry date, next due date, renewal amount and whether auto-renew is on.
- The bell at the top right notifies you of domains expiring within 30 days. You also receive email reminders 30 days and 7 days before expiry, and 3 days after if it hasn't been renewed.
Auto-renew
When Auto Renew is on (the default), a renewal proforma invoice is issued automatically before expiry and emailed to you. As soon as you pay it, the domain is renewed at the registry.
Note: "auto" means the proforma invoice is created automatically. The domain is renewed only once it's paid. If you don't pay, it will expire.
To change it: on the domain page, Auto Renew card, switch the toggle to Enabled or Disabled. You'll see that auto-renew was updated. Turn it off only if you don't want to keep the domain: no proforma invoice will be issued and you won't receive reminders.
Renewing now (manually)
You can renew whenever you like, and for several years. The time is added to the current expiry, so you lose nothing by renewing early.
One domain
- Open the domain page and find the Renew card.
- Choose a period (e.g. "2 years — €x"). Prices exclude VAT.
- Click Create Proforma Invoice and confirm.
- Pay the proforma invoice (How to pay a proforma invoice). The renewal at the registry happens after payment.
Several domains together
- In My Domains, click Renew Domains.
- Tick the domains you want and choose a period for each.
- Click Create Proforma Invoice. One proforma invoice is created for all of them.
If the domain has add-ons (e.g. DNS Management), you also see their cost, because they renew along with it.
What happens if it expires
| Status | What it means | Can I renew it? |
|---|---|---|
| Grace | The domain has expired. Website and email don't work, but it's still yours. | Yes, from the Renew card. Depending on the extension, a grace period fee may be added, shown before you create the proforma invoice. |
| Redemption | The grace period has passed. The registry holds the domain a little longer before deleting it. | Yes, with a redemption fee from the registry, usually several times the normal renewal. It takes longer. |
| Expired | The domain has been deleted by the registry or can no longer be renewed. | Only if it's still free, by registering it again (Search and register). If someone else took it, it's gone. |
How long each period lasts depends on the extension (.gr, .com, .eu etc.) and is set by its registry. So don't rely on them: always renew before expiry.
Tip: For domains that matter a lot to you (brand name, online shop), renew them for 2 or more years and keep auto-renew on. Also check that your account email is correct, so you receive the reminders.
.gr and .ελ domains
- They're renewed in 2-year periods.
- The domain stays in the name of the same registrant. To change the registrant, see Changing the owner of a .gr domain.
Messages and problems
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| There's already an unpaid renewal proforma invoice for the domain. Pay it first | Click View Proforma Invoice and pay it. If you want a different period, send a ticket to billing and we'll cancel it. |
| I can't see the Renew card | The domain is cancelled or pending, or you're a user without the "Manage domains" permission. Send a ticket. |
| I paid but the expiry date hasn't changed | The renewal at the registry runs once the payment is credited, and the date updates within a few hours. If a day passes, send a ticket. |
| The domain was renewed but the website doesn't load | After an expiry it may take a few hours to come back (DNS propagation). Also check that the hosting service is active. |
