Multicast Radio: Your station's connection details and listening links

Applies to: Multicast Radio. Not sure which panel you have? See Which radio or video panel do I have?

Your station has two kinds of details:

  • Connection details (for whoever broadcasts): you enter these in your broadcasting software (BUTT, RadioBOSS etc.) to send audio to the server.
  • Listening links (for your listeners): you give these to players, apps and radio directories.

The two are often mixed up. If you put a listening link into your broadcasting software, or connection details into a player, it won't work.

Where to find them

LocationWhat it shows
Panel → Dashboard → Server Connection cardServer, Port, Mount Point, Source Password and the Proxy URL.
Panel → Streaming → Stream SettingsThe listening links (Stream URLs card), Server Connection, DJ Connection and Port Allocation.
Panel → DJ Accounts → ⋮ → Connection GuideThe full details for a specific DJ, with guides for BUTT, RadioBOSS, SAM Broadcaster, VirtualDJ and Radio Caster.
Panel → Quick LinksAll listening links, files for VLC, and a QR code.
Client Area → service page → Usage statistics → StreamingServer, Port, Mount, source Password, Proxy URL and Direct URL, without opening the panel.

Every value has a copy button next to it. Use it instead of typing: one wrong character in the password is enough to make the connection fail.

Connection details: which ones to use

There are two ways to send audio to your station, and each has its own details.

a) As a DJ (recommended for packages with AutoDJ)

FieldValue
Server type / ProtocolIcecast (Icecast 2)
ServerAs shown under DJ Connection or in the DJ's Connection Guide
PortThe Source Port (always the Stream Port + 2)
Mount/live
UsernameThe DJ's username
PasswordThe DJ's password

This way, the DJ is on air the moment they connect. When they disconnect, AutoDJ carries on by itself within about 1-2 seconds. Audio processing, show recordings and DJ statistics only work with this method. See DJ accounts.

b) Directly to the server (live-only packages)

FieldValue
Server typeIcecast (or Shoutcast, if you chose Shoutcast 2 in Stream Settings)
ServerAs shown in the Server Connection card
PortThe Stream Port
Mount/stream
Username (if asked)source
PasswordThe Source Password

This method is for stations that broadcast continuously from their own software. If your package has AutoDJ, use method (a) instead.

Which ports you'll see: in Stream Settings, the Port Allocation card shows four ports. You only need the Stream Port and the Source Port. The other two (Admin and Control) are used internally by the system.

Listening links: which one goes where

LinkFormatWhere to use it
Stream URL (Proxy) (recommended)https://…/listen/usernameWebsite players, mobile apps, radio directories, smart speakers. It goes through the standard HTTPS port 443, so it works even behind strict company and school firewalls.
Direct URLhttp(s)://…:port/streamOnly when an app insists on a direct connection to the server. Some networks block non-standard ports.
Playlist files (M3U, PLS etc.)Downloaded from Quick LinksFor VLC, Winamp, Windows Media Player and similar desktop software.
Public Pagehttps://…/station/usernameFor sharing your station on social media, with a ready-to-play player.

If you have a Custom Domain, your listening link becomes https://your-domain/listen.

Changing the source password

If the source password was given to someone who should no longer broadcast, change it:

  1. Go to Stream Settings and, in the Server Connection card, click the regenerate button next to Source Password.
  2. Confirm. You'll see Password regenerated!
  3. Click Restart so the server picks up the new password.
  4. Enter the new password in the software of everyone who should keep broadcasting.

You can also change it from Settings → Stream Settings card → Regenerate. A restart disconnects listeners for a few seconds, so do it at a quiet time. DJs are not affected, because they have their own passwords.

Common mistakes

  • I used the Source Password for a DJ. The Source Port (/live) only accepts DJ usernames and passwords.
  • I used the Stream Port with mount /live. /live goes with the Source Port, /stream with the Stream Port.
  • The player on my website doesn't play. You are most likely using the link with http:// and a port number. Use the Stream URL (Proxy) instead. See A player for your website.
  • My software asks for "Shoutcast". When connecting as a DJ, always choose Icecast. See Broadcasting live.
