Which extension to choose: .gr, .el, .com, .eu, .net, .org and others

The extension (TLD) is the last part of the domain: .gr, .com, .eu etc. It doesn't affect how your website or email works, but it shows who you're addressing and has its own rules and price.

Comparison

ExtensionWho it's forGood to know
.grAnything aimed at an audience in Greece: businesses, stations, organisations, personal sites. The most recognisable for Greek users and good for local searches. Registered and renewed in 2-year periods. The owner's details aren't published. A change of owner is chargeable (instructions).
.ελThe Greek extension in Greek characters.A good complement to .gr. For your main email address prefer Latin characters, because not all email programs support Greek ones.
.comThe most widespread extension worldwide, for any use.Ideal if you also address people outside Greece. Many short names are already taken.
.euFor those addressing all of Europe. The owner must be an EU (or EEA) citizen, resident or company. In Greek characters there's .ευ.
.netOriginally for technology and networks; general-purpose today.A good alternative when .com isn't available.
.orgAssociations, non-profits, communities. There's no restriction, but visitors associate it with organisations.
.info, .online, .radio, .fm etc.Special or newer extensions.Useful for a distinctive name or topic. Watch the renewal price, which for some is much higher than the first registration.

Our advice

  • Mainly addressing Greece? Start with .gr.
  • Also have an audience abroad (e.g. an internet radio for the Greek diaspora)? Get .gr and .com, and make one redirect to the other.
  • Before deciding, check the registration, transfer and renewal prices in Pricing.

Where to see prices and availability
