Nextcloud: Files, folders and sharing with a link

0 views

In Nextcloud you work with your files in your browser, without installing anything. To log in, see Nextcloud: First steps.

Uploading files and folders

  • In the Files app, click + New → Upload files to upload files, or New folder to create a folder.
  • You can also drag files or whole folders from your computer into the window.
  • To rename, move, copy, download or delete, click the three dots (…) next to the file.
  • The star adds a file to Favorites, so you can find it quickly.

Sharing with a link

With a share link you give a file or folder to anyone, even if they don't have a Nextcloud account.

  1. Click the share icon next to the file or folder. The Sharing tab opens on the right.
  2. Next to Share link, click + to create a link.
  3. Click the copy icon and send the link by email or message.

From the link's settings (three dots next to it) you can:

  • set a password, so only people who know it can open it;
  • set an expiration date, after which the link stops working;
  • choose whether the other person can only view and download, edit or, for folders, only upload files (without seeing the rest). The last one is useful for clients or partners to send you files;
  • delete the link, so it stops working immediately.

Anyone with the link has access. For personal or important files, always set a password and an expiration date.

Deleted files and old versions

  • Whatever you delete goes to Deleted files (bottom left in Files). You can restore it from there. Deleted files are permanently removed after a while, or sooner if space is needed.
  • When you change a file, Nextcloud keeps its previous versions. Open the file's details (three dots → Open details) and the Versions tab to go back to an older one.

Both use your package's space. If you need space, empty Deleted files.
