What is FTP and how do I upload my files with FileZilla
10992 viewsFTP is how you transfer files from your computer to your hosting server and back. You use it with a program such as the free FileZilla (Windows, Mac, Linux).
What you need
- Server (Host): your domain or the server address.
- Username and password: of the FTP account. You can see the main account's details on the service page, under Login credentials. You create extra accounts from the control panel: cPanel or Plesk.
- Port: 21 for FTP/FTPS, 22 for SFTP (if your account supports it).
Connecting with FileZilla
- Download and install FileZilla Client from filezilla-project.org.
- Go to File → Site Manager and click New Site.
- Under Protocol choose FTP, and under Encryption choose Require explicit FTP over TLS for an encrypted connection. (Or choose SFTP if we've given it to you.)
- Enter the Host, Port, User and Password and click Connect.
- The first time, accept the server's certificate.
Where do I upload my files
- cPanel: into the
public_htmlfolder. - Plesk: into the
httpdocsfolder.
Drag the files from the left (your computer) to the right (the server).
If it won't connect, check your details again. After several failed attempts your IP may be blocked temporarily. In that case, open a support ticket.
