Multicast Radio: Statistics and listeners - how many listen, from where and for how long

Multicast Radio records every minute who is listening to your station. From this it builds statistics: how many listeners, when, from which country and city, on which device and for how long. There are two pages in the Streaming menu: Statistics for the history and Listeners for right now.

Listeners: what's happening right now

The Listeners page (Listener Report) refreshes itself every 30 seconds and shows:

  • Live Listeners, Peak today, how many Countries and the Total Listen Time.
  • A table with each listener: Location, IP Address, the software or device (User Agent), Agent Type and Listen Time.
  • Top Countries, Top User Agents, a map of your listeners and a Listeners per Hour (Today) chart.

Statistics: the picture over time

Period

Choose Today, 7 Days (default), 30 Days, 90 Days, This Year, Last Year or All Time. Hourly shows a specific day hour by hour (up to 30 days back). Top 10 / 25 / 50 sets how many lines the lists have.

Key figures

FigureWhat it means
Unique listenersHow many different connections (IPs) listened during the period.
Peak listenersThe highest number of simultaneous listeners.
Live NowHow many are listening right now.
Active DaysOn how many days of the period you had listeners.
Listening Minutes / HoursThe total time everyone listened together (TLH, Total Listening Hours). It's the most reliable figure for advertisers.
Average Session LengthHow long a listener stays on average.

Tabs

  • Listeners: a daily chart, 7, 14 and 30-day trends, a breakdown of listening duration (from 0-30 seconds to 4 hours and more), and your most loyal listeners.
  • Map: where people listen from.
  • User Agents: which programs, browsers and operating systems.
  • Tracks and Artists: what played most, by count and by time. These two tabs always show the last 30 days, whichever period you choose.
  • Countries and Cities.

Printing and reports

  • Print: prints or saves the page as a PDF through your browser's print function, with a station and period header. Useful for advertisers.
  • Download Report: downloads a text file (.txt) with a summary, countries, cities and top tracks.

How far back data is kept

  • Hourly data: 30 days.
  • Daily listener data: 1 year. "All Time" goes back up to one year.
  • Track history: 30 days.

If you need data over a longer period, keep a Download Report or a PDF printout every month.

How to read the numbers

  • "Listener" = one connection. Two people listening on the same speaker count as one. One person listening on a phone and a computer at the same time counts as two.
  • Very short connections (0-30 seconds) are usually people passing by, or directories and apps checking whether the station is on air.
  • Location: worked out from the IP address and approximate, especially on mobile data, where the city may show as the capital for the whole country.
  • Listeners' IP addresses are personal data. Don't publish or share them, e.g. in reports for advertisers.

Statistics on your website

To show on your website how many people are listening, or a listener map, use the Live Listeners and Listeners Map widgets (Players and widgets).

Common problems

ProblemExplanation / solution
"No data for this period"There were no listeners, or the station was off air. For new stations, data appears after the first listeners.
Tracks shows less than I expected for "This Year"Track history is kept for 30 days.
A directory platform's statistics differ from oursEach platform only counts its own listeners, in its own way. Our statistics include everyone.
I can see myself among the listenersCorrect: every connection counts, including yours from the Dashboard or Studio.
