Multicast Radio: DJ accounts - live broadcasting access, allowed hours and recordings

DJ accounts give each presenter on your station their own details for live broadcasting. The DJ connects their broadcasting software (BUTT, RadioBOSS, SAM Broadcaster, VirtualDJ etc.) or the Web DJ. While they broadcast, listeners hear them. When they disconnect, AutoDJ carries on by itself, with no silence. This way you never have to give anyone your panel password or Source Password, and you can close a DJ's access with one click.

New DJ

  1. Go to Streaming → DJ Accounts → + Add DJ.
  2. Fill in:
    • Username: Latin letters, numbers and underscores only, e.g. george_dj. It must be unique on your station.
    • Display Name: the name listeners see while the DJ is live, e.g. "DJ George".
    • Email (optional, for your own reference).
    • Password: pre-filled with a random 12-character password. The button next to it generates another. Copy it now; you'll also find it later in the Connection Guide.
    • Can record: whether their shows may be recorded.
    • Auto record: (only shown if the previous box is ticked) every time a DJ goes live, the show is recorded automatically.
  3. Click Save. You'll see DJ created successfully.

Your package has a limit on the number of DJs. If you exceed it, you'll see "DJ limit reached. Upgrade your package."

Give the DJ their details

  1. On the DJ's card, click ⋮ → Connection Guide.
  2. You'll see the Connection Details: Server, Port, Mount Point (/live), Username, Password (click the eye to reveal it) and Protocol (Icecast2).
  3. The tabs below have short guides for BUTT, RadioBOSS, SAM Broadcaster, VirtualDJ and Radio Caster, with the details already filled in.
  4. Send the DJ their details and a link to the matching article: BUTT, RadioBOSS, or other software.

The same general details (Server, Port, /live) are in the Connection Information card on the DJ page, and under Stream Settings → DJ Connection.

Important: for a DJ to connect, the station must be playing (Start) with AutoDJ enabled. The DJ must enter their own username in their software, not "source", which many programs suggest.

What you see for each DJ

  • A red LIVE badge while they're broadcasting.
  • Connects, total Airtime and Last Connect.
  • The Active switch: if you turn it off, the DJ can't connect.
  • A REC badge if they have recording permission, and ⚡ if they have auto record.

At the top of the page you see totals: Total DJs, Active DJs, Total Connections and Total Airtime.

DJ schedule: when they're allowed to broadcast

If you want a DJ to be able to go on air only during their slot:

  1. ⋮ → Schedule.
  2. Switch on Enable Schedule.
  3. Tick the days and set From / To for each day. Unticked days = no connection that day.
  4. Save. You'll see DJ schedule saved.

The times follow your account's time zone. Outside the allowed hours the DJ's software simply fails to connect, usually with a wrong-password or connection-refused message. When their time is up, the DJ is disconnected.

Shows that run past midnight: each day has its own hours within that day. For a show from Friday 22:00 to Saturday 02:00, set Friday 22:00-23:59 and Saturday 00:00-02:00.

Recording shows

  • Automatically: if a DJ has Auto record, every live show on the station is recorded from start to disconnect.
  • Manually: the Record button on the Dashboard or in Studio while the DJ is live.

Recordings are saved as 192 kbps MP3s under Tracks, in the records folder, titled "Recording: DJ name - date time". They use space from your package, so download and delete old ones. If you put them in a playlist or schedule, you can rebroadcast a show.

Auto record starts whichever DJ goes live, as long as some active DJ has the option. The file title uses the name of the DJ with auto record. If you have several DJs, check the date and time to tell which show it is. To record the whole programme, not just live shows, see Aircheck.

Changing the password, deactivating, deleting

  • ⋮ → Reset Password: set a new password (again a random one). The DJ will need to enter it in their software.
  • The Active switch: temporarily "closes" the DJ without losing their details and statistics.
  • ⋮ → Delete: permanent.

If the DJ is broadcasting when you deactivate them, they're disconnected immediately and the station goes back to AutoDJ.

Dual DJ: two DJs at the same time

Dual DJ Mode lets several DJs broadcast together (e.g. two presenters in different homes) and mixes their audio. If the card shows a Pro badge, the feature isn't in your package; you can add it from the Client Area.

  1. Turn on the switch in the Dual DJ Mode card and click Confirm & Restart. The station restarts and any live DJs are disconnected.
  2. Each DJ gets their own mount: /dj-username instead of /live. You'll see it on the DJ's card and in the Connection Guide.

At least two active DJs are needed; otherwise everyone uses /live. Every time you add, rename, activate or deactivate a DJ in Dual DJ mode, click Restart so the mounts are updated.

Common problems

ProblemSolution
The DJ gets "authentication failed" or "401"Wrong username or password, the DJ is inactive, or outside their allowed hours. Also check that the software's user/login field contains the DJ's username, not "source".
The DJ can't connect at all ("connection refused" / timeout)The station is stopped, or AutoDJ is disabled in Stream Settings. Click Start. Also check the port is the Source Port with mount /live.
"DJ … is already live"Without Dual DJ, only one DJ can be on /live. The previous DJ must disconnect first.
The DJ connected but listeners still hear musicUsually the DJ's software isn't sending audio (wrong sound card / muted). Test by listening to the station on another device.
Radio Spots don't play during the live showThat's expected: spots are skipped while a DJ is live.
"This DJ does not have recording permission"Switch on Can record for the DJ (⋮ → Edit).
