Multicast Radio: Relaying another station (Restream)
3 viewsApplies to: Multicast Radio. Not sure which panel you have? See Which radio or video panel do I have?
With Restream, your station plays the audio of another stream live. A common example is a big station's news bulletin every lunchtime. Other examples: a live match commentary, or a link-up with the "parent" station of a network. When the restream ends, or if the other stream goes down, your station automatically goes back to its own music.
Permission: only relay stations whose owner has given you permission.
What you need
- A package with AutoDJ.
- The other station's listening link, e.g.
https://stream.example.com:8000/live. Icecast and Shoutcast links work, as do direct MP3 links and M3U files. If the station only offers a page with a player, ask them for the direct stream link. - You can't relay your own station: it would create an endless audio loop, and the panel prevents it.
Method 1: restream at specific times (Schedule)
This is the usual method, e.g. "news every day 15:00-15:15".
- Go to Streaming → Schedule → + New Schedule.
- Enter a Name and choose Type: Restream.
- Set the Start Time and End Time. The end time is required for a restream.
- Choose the Days and, if you like, dates.
- Under Restream Settings, fill in:
- Stream URL: the other station's link.
- Display Name: what listeners see as "now playing" if the other station doesn't send titles (e.g. "News").
- Buffer (sec): 1 to 30, default 5. A higher value means a more stable relay, but also more delay. If you hear dropouts, raise it to 10-15.
- Volume (dB): -20 to +20, default 0. If the other station sounds quieter or louder than yours, correct it here.
- Click Save.
At the start time the station switches to the restream, and the Dashboard shows RESTREAM. The playlist carries on "in the background". At the end time the restream stops and the music resumes. If the playlist has Shuffle, it starts from a new track.
One link per station: all restream schedules of a station use the same link, the one from the restream schedule with the highest Priority. If you need to relay two different stations at different times, send us a ticket and we'll help you set it up.
Every time you change the link, buffer, volume or name, AutoDJ briefly restarts. Make these changes at a quiet time.
Method 2: permanent restream (Stream Settings)
If you want your station to relay another one continuously, and play your own music only when that station is off air:
- Go to Streaming → Stream Settings → Restream card → Add.
- Fill in Name, Stream URL, Priority (0-100; higher is preferred) and Volume (dB).
- Click Add. You'll see Restream target added successfully.
As long as this source is active and available, it plays continuously instead of the playlist. The playlist is only heard when the source goes down. If you add several sources, the available one with the highest priority plays. To go back to your music, click the pause button on the source's row. You'll see Restream Disabled. The same button switches it back on.
Every time you add, change, pause or delete a source, AutoDJ briefly restarts.
What takes precedence
The order of priority is: Live DJ → Restream → AutoDJ (playlist). If a DJ connects during a restream, the DJ is heard. Radio Spots briefly interrupt the restream, which then continues.
When the other station doesn't respond
If the link doesn't work, your station plays the playlist so there's no silence. If the problem lasts about 3 minutes, you'll see a notification under the bell in the panel ("Πρόβλημα αναμετάδοσης", restream problem). When it recovers you'll see "Η αναμετάδοση επανήλθε" (restream restored).
Recording a restream
During a restream you can click Record on the Dashboard or in Studio to keep it as an MP3 in the records folder.
Common problems
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| "Cannot restream your own station" | The link points to your own station. Use the other station's link. |
| "End time is required for restream" | Fill in the End Time. |
| At restream time, the music carries on | The link isn't working. Open it in your browser or VLC to check that it plays. Web page links (e.g. the station's home page) don't work; you need the stream link. |
| The restream keeps dropping out | Raise the Buffer to 10-15 seconds. |
| My music never plays any more | You have an active source in the Restream card of Stream Settings. Pause it. |
| The restream is quieter than my music | Raise the Volume (dB), e.g. +3. |
