Multicast Video: Statistics and viewers map
4 viewsApplies to: Multicast Video. Not sure which panel you have? See Which radio or video panel do I have?
The panel records who watches your channel, from where, for how long and on which device. With this information you know which hours bring the most viewers, which videos are played most and whether your channel is growing. It's also useful when you talk to advertisers.
There are two pages:
- Streaming → Statistics: detailed figures for any period you like (today, a week, a month, a year).
- Streaming → Viewers Map: what's happening right now, who's watching at this moment and from where.
How viewers are counted
Read this section before you look at the numbers, so you interpret them correctly:
- One viewer = one internet connection (IP address). If three people in a home or office watch from the same connection, they count as one viewer. On the other hand, someone who switches from Wi-Fi to mobile data may be counted twice.
- Everyone watching from your public page, the player on your website, the widgets, VLC or apps using the HLS link, and from your Custom Domain, is counted.
- Viewers watching you on YouTube, Facebook etc. through Stream Targets are not counted. You'll find them in each platform's own statistics.
- The location (country, city) is estimated from the IP address. The city may be the city of the viewer's internet provider rather than where they actually are.
- All dates and times are in your account time zone (Settings → Timezone, see Account settings).
- Viewer numbers for the same minute may differ slightly between pages, because each page updates at different times. That's normal.
A quick look without opening Statistics
- The top bar of every panel page shows whether the channel is Online or Offline and how many viewers are watching now ("• N viewers").
- On the Dashboard, in the Stream Control card, you see Viewers now and Peak today (today's maximum).
- The Dashboard also has the Viewer Locations Map card, with a Details button that opens the Viewers Map.
The Statistics page
Choose a period
- Go to Streaming → Statistics.
- At the top of the page, click the period: Today, 7 days (default), 30 days, 90 days, This Year, Last Year or All.
- For an hour-by-hour breakdown of a specific day, click Hourly and pick a date from the calendar that appears above the chart.
- With Top 10 / Top 25 / Top 50 you choose how many rows the ranking lists show (countries, cities, videos etc.).
The six key numbers
| Card | What it means |
|---|---|
| Unique viewers | How many different connections watched the channel during the period. |
| Peak viewers | The highest number of viewers you had at the same time. |
| Live Now | How many are watching right now. |
| Active Days | On how many days of the period you had viewers, e.g. 6/7. |
| Viewing Minutes / Viewing Hours | The total time all viewers watched, added together. If 10 viewers watched for an hour each, viewing hours is 10. |
The tabs
- Viewers: a chart of viewers per hour or per day, the Period Overview table (sessions, average watching time, unique countries etc.), the 7, 14 and 30-day Viewer Trends (whether you're going up or down), the Session Length Distribution (how many watch a few minutes and how many for hours) and the top viewers by sessions and by minutes.
- Map: a map of your viewers' locations for the period.
- User Agents: what viewers watch with: Top Browsers, Top Operating Systems (e.g. Android, iOS, Windows) and top programs. It tells you whether your viewers are mostly on phones or computers.
- Videos: how many videos were played, storage space, Top Videos by Playbacks, Top Videos by Airtime and Avg Videos per Hour.
- Countries and Cities: viewer rankings by country and by city.
If a period has no viewers, you'll see "No data for this period".
Printing and reports
- Print: opens your browser's print dialog. From there you can also choose "Save as PDF".
- Download Report: downloads a plain text file (.txt) with the figures for the period you're viewing, named like
video-stats-[from]-to-[to].txt. It opens in any text editor.
Tip for advertisers: choose 30 days, click Print → "Save as PDF". You have a ready monthly report with unique viewers, peak viewers, viewing hours and countries.
The Viewers Map (what's happening now)
Go to Streaming → Viewers Map (or click Live Map inside Statistics). The page updates by itself every 30 seconds; you don't need to refresh it.
- At the top you see four numbers: Live viewers, Peak today, Countries and Total Watch Time.
- The map shows where viewers are. With its buttons you can open it in Fullscreen or reset it with Recenter Map. In fullscreen it looks great on a screen in the studio.
- The Current Viewers table has one row per viewer: location (first column), IP Address, the program or browser they use, device Type and Watch Time. If nobody is watching, it says "Waiting for viewers...".
- Next to it are the Top Countries and Top User Agents cards and the Viewers per Hour (Today) chart.
A "live" viewer is anyone who has watched within the last two minutes. When someone closes the player, they drop off the list within a few minutes.
Personal data: the table shows your viewers' full IP addresses. Don't publish them and don't share screenshots of the table. If you want to show publicly how many people are watching, use the globe on your public page or the Viewers and Viewer Locations Map widgets (see Widgets), which don't show IPs.
Your package's viewer limit
Your package has a concurrent viewer limit, shown under Settings → My Package → Max Viewers and on the Dashboard (Streaming Information → Max Viewers). When the limit is reached, extra viewers can't load the channel until someone leaves. If Statistics show that your Peak viewers often reach the limit, it's time to upgrade (see Upgrading your package).
Messages / Common problems
| Message or problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| "No data for this period" | There were no viewers in the period, or the channel was stopped. Try a longer period. |
| "Waiting for viewers..." on the Viewers Map | Nobody is watching right now. Open the public page on a phone and click Play: you'll appear within a few seconds. |
| I have lots of viewers on YouTube but few here | Stream Targets viewers aren't counted here. Check each platform's own statistics. |
| The times on the charts are shifted | Check the Timezone in Settings. |
| A city I didn't expect | The location is estimated from the IP. Often the internet provider's city appears (e.g. Athens for viewers from all over Greece). |
| I know 3 people are watching but it counts 1 | They're watching from the same internet connection, so they count as one viewer. |
| New viewers can't watch the channel when I have many | Your package's viewer limit has been reached. See "Your package's viewer limit". |
