Multicast Video: Custom Domain - your channel on your own domain with HTTPS

With Custom Domain, your channel opens from an address on your own domain, e.g. https://tv.mystation.com, instead of our server's address. The root of the domain opens your channel's public page, and there are also links for VLC and for the direct HLS stream. The SSL certificate (for https://) is issued free by Let's Encrypt, with one click.

The whole process has three steps: you set the domain, add a DNS record and enable SSL.

Before you start

  • The feature must be included in your package. It's available on packages that include it. If you see a yellow PRO badge next to Custom Domain in the menu, the page only shows a description of the feature. Ask us to upgrade your package (see Upgrading or downgrading your package).
  • You need a domain and access to its DNS settings: in the Client Area if the domain is with us, using DNS Management (see DNS Management - adding an A record), or at the provider where it's registered.
  • Use a subdomain, e.g. tv.mystation.com or live.mystation.com. That way your main domain (mystation.com) stays free for your website.
  • Each channel can have one custom domain, and each domain can only be connected to one channel.

Step 1: Set Domain

  1. Go to Streaming → Custom Domain.
  2. In the Step 1: Set Domain field, type the subdomain, e.g. tv.mystation.com. Type the name only: no https://, no www unless you want it, and no trailing /.
  3. Click Add.
  4. You'll see a message (in Greek) saying the domain was saved and you should set up DNS. The domain appears as a label with a Remove button next to it, and the status becomes Pending DNS.

Step 2: DNS Setup

The page says "Add the following A record to your domain's DNS settings:" and shows three values:

Value on the pageWhat to enter in DNS management
TypeA
NameThe first part of the subdomain, e.g. tv for tv.mystation.com. Some providers call it "Host".
ValueThe IP address shown on the page. Copy it exactly from there. Some providers call it "Points to" or "IP".
TTL (if asked)Leave the default, or enter 3600.
  1. Open your domain's DNS management in a new tab and add the A record with the values above.
  2. If another record already exists for the same name (A, AAAA or CNAME), delete it. There must be only one A record, with the IP from the page.
  3. Wait. The page tells you: "DNS changes may take up to 24 hours to propagate. Usually takes 5-30 minutes." (More about propagation in Nameservers and DNS propagation.)
  4. Go back to the panel and click Verify DNS.
  5. If everything is right, you'll see a message (in Greek) that DNS was verified and you can enable SSL, and the status becomes DNS OK. If you get an error, see the table at the end, fix it, wait a little and click Verify DNS again.
Cloudflare and other CDNs: if your domain goes through Cloudflare, the record must be set to DNS only (grey cloud), not Proxied (orange cloud). With Proxied, the check sees Cloudflare's IP instead of ours and fails, and so does issuing the SSL certificate.
If you really want the main domain (e.g. mystation.com without a subdomain): the page will show the first part of the domain as the Name (e.g. mystation), but that doesn't apply to a main domain. In DNS management the A record's Name is @ (or left empty). The main domain then can't also serve your website, which is why we recommend a subdomain.

Step 3: SSL Certificate

  1. When the status is DNS OK, the page says "SSL certificate will be created from Let's Encrypt". Click Enable SSL.
  2. You'll see "Creating SSL certificate..." and "Please wait, this may take 1-2 minutes.". Don't close or refresh the page while you wait.
  3. When it's done you'll see "SSL enabled!" and "Page will refresh". The status becomes Active.

If the wait takes too long, the page may say that SSL may have been enabled, with a link to refresh. Click it to see the current status.

In some cases the status stays at SSL pending, with the message "Contact the administrator to complete SSL activation.". Send us a ticket (see Support ticket): we complete the activation and, once we reply, click Check SSL.

Once the domain is active

The page shows "Custom domain is active!" and three new addresses, each with a copy button:

AddressWhat it isWhere to use it
Public Page: https://tv.mystation.comYour channel's public page, with player, chat etc.To send to viewers, post on social media, print on posters.
VLC Link: https://tv.mystation.com/vlcA link for VLC, OBS and media players. For people who watch the channel with VLC or another media player.
Direct HLS: https://tv.mystation.com/index.m3u8The direct HLS stream. For players on your website, apps and smart TVs.

Your channel's original addresses (on the Quick Links page) keep working normally. You don't need to change the players you've already set up right away.

The right-hand column shows:

  • SSL Certificate: when it's valid from and to, and how many Days remaining. The certificate renews automatically before it expires. If you still see Expired, send us a ticket.
  • A QR Code for the public page on the new domain.
  • Recent Actions: a history of what happened (Set Domain, Verify DNS, Enable SSL etc.) and whether it succeeded.

What does NOT change with a custom domain

  • The address for OBS/vMix doesn't change. You keep broadcasting to the RTMP Server shown on the Live page (see Live broadcasting with OBS or vMix).
  • Your package's concurrent viewer limit also applies on the new domain.
  • If you turn off the Public Page switch on your public page, the page isn't shown on the new domain either.

Regenerate Config and removing the domain

Regenerate Config

If the channel plays normally from the original addresses but something doesn't work on the custom domain, click Regenerate Config ("Use if there is a streaming issue") and click Regenerate in the window that opens. The domain's settings are rewritten on the server and you'll see a message (in Greek) that the configuration was regenerated successfully. It's harmless and doesn't affect the channel.

Removing

  1. In Step 1, click Remove next to the domain.
  2. In the Delete Domain window ("Do you want to delete this domain?") click Delete.
  3. You'll see a message (in Greek) that the custom domain was removed. The addresses on your domain stop working immediately.
  4. Delete the A record from DNS management too, or change it if you want to use the subdomain elsewhere.
Before removing: if you've put links with the custom domain on websites or apps, switch them to the original links from the Quick Links page first, otherwise viewers will see an error.

To use a different domain, remove the old one and start again from Step 1.

Messages / Common problems

MessageWhat to do
"Μη έγκυρο domain format" (invalid domain format)Enter just the domain, e.g. tv.mystation.com, without https://, spaces, Greek characters or /.
"Αυτό το domain χρησιμοποιείται ήδη" (this domain is already in use)The domain is already connected to another channel. If it's yours, send us a ticket.
"Δεν βρέθηκε A record." (no A record found)The record hasn't been created or hasn't propagated yet. Check that the Name is right (e.g. tv, not tv.mystation.com.mystation.com) and wait a little.
"Το A record δείχνει σε X. Πρέπει να δείχνει σε Y" (the A record points to X, it must point to Y)The record has the wrong IP, or there's a second A record for the same name, or Cloudflare is set to Proxied. Fix it so there's only one A record with the IP from the page, set to DNS only.
"Πρέπει πρώτα να επαληθεύσετε το DNS" (you must verify DNS first)Finish Step 2 first with Verify DNS.
"Αποτυχία SSL: …" (SSL failed)Usually the domain doesn't reach our server: Cloudflare set to Proxied, or an AAAA (IPv6) record pointing elsewhere. Fix it and click Enable SSL again. If it persists, send us a ticket with the message.
SSL pendingThe certificate needs to be completed by us. Send us a ticket and then click Check SSL.
The domain is Active but the player doesn't playCheck that the channel is playing (Dashboard). If it plays from the original links, click Regenerate Config.
I see "Private Channel" on the new domainThe Public Page switch on your public page is off.
