Multicast Video: Playlists - creating them, ordering videos and the active playlist

When you aren't broadcasting live, your channel plays videos from one playlist: the active one. You can have as many playlists as you like, e.g. "Morning slot", "Movies", "Music videos", "Christmas", and switch between them by hand or automatically with the Schedule.

The active playlist plays continuously: when the last video ends, it starts again from the top.

The playlist list

Go to Content → Playlists. Each card shows the name, description, number of Videos and total Duration.

  • The card with the green ACTIVE NOW strip is the one playing on your channel.
  • The Default badge marks the default playlist. Every account starts with a playlist called Default Playlist. The default playlist can't be deleted.
  • The Shuffle badge means the playlist plays in random order.
  • At the bottom of each card there are Manage and a green ▶ to Activate. The ⋮ menu has View, Edit, Activate, Set as default and Delete.

What plays when you press Start

When you start the channel from the Dashboard, the active playlist plays. If there is no active playlist or it's empty, the Default one plays. If that's empty too, all your ready videos play, newest first.

New playlist

  1. Click New Playlist.
  2. Enter a Name (required) and, if you like, a Description.
  3. Click Create. You'll see "Playlist created". The new playlist is empty and isn't playing yet.

To change the name or description later: ⋮ → Edit → Save.

Adding videos

  1. On the playlist's card, click Manage.
  2. On the left you see the Videos in Playlist. On the right, under Add Videos, you see your ready videos that aren't in this playlist yet.
  3. If you like, narrow the list down:
    • with the folder filter (All folders, No folder or a specific folder; the number in brackets shows how many videos are left to add), or
    • by typing part of the title in Search.
  4. Add videos in one of these ways:
    • The + button on the right of a video.
    • Tick several (or Select all) and click Add (N).
    • Choose a folder in the filter and click Entire folder. Confirm 'Add N videos from "folder"?'. You'll see "Added N videos!".
For large folders: the list on the right loads 20 videos at a time. Select all and Entire folder only add the videos that have been loaded. Check the number in the confirmation message: if it's lower than the number of videos in the folder, first click Load more at the bottom of the list (until it no longer appears), or repeat the add until you see All videos are in the playlist.

Only videos with the status Ready can go into a playlist. Videos still Optimizing will appear once they finish. Each video can appear once per playlist, but it can belong to several playlists at the same time. The badges under each video show which other playlists it's in.

You can also add videos from the Videos page: ⋮ → To playlist. See Managing your videos.

Video order

  • Drag a video by its handle on the left (Drag to reorder), or use the Up / Down buttons. You'll see "Order saved!".
  • The list on the left shows 20 videos per page. For large playlists, change Show at the top to 50 or 100 so you see more while reordering.
  • With Shuffle on, the order you set is ignored.

Removing videos

Click ✕ (Remove) on a video and confirm, or tick several (or All) and click Remove Selected (N). The video only leaves this playlist; it stays under Videos and in your other playlists. To delete a video for good, do it from the Videos page.

Shuffle (random order)

The Shuffle switch is at the top of the Manage page and is saved immediately ("Saved"). With Shuffle, the order is reshuffled when the playlist is activated, when you change its contents and every time the last video plays, so each cycle has a different order.

Activating a playlist

  1. Click the green ▶ on the playlist's card, or ⋮ → Activate, or Activate inside Manage.
  2. Confirm 'Activate playlist "…"? It will start playing immediately.'.
  3. You'll see "Playlist activated!" and the card gets the ACTIVE NOW strip.

If the channel is playing, the current video is cut and the new playlist starts. For a smooth change at a specific time, use the Schedule, which can wait for the current video to finish.

Activating doesn't start the channel. If the channel is stopped, the playlist is set as active and will play when you click Start on the Dashboard.
If you have a schedule: while a Playlist-type schedule is in effect, the system puts the schedule's playlist back within about a minute. To permanently change what plays at that time, change the schedule.

While you're live (OBS or camera) or while a restream is playing, viewers see that source. The active playlist carries on when the live broadcast or restream ends.

Changing a playlist that's on air

Additions, removals and reordering in the active playlist take effect without cutting the video that's playing now. If you want to be sure the channel has picked up the new list, click Save List ("Playlist saved!") or the reload-playlist button on the Dashboard.

If you've set jingles for this playlist in the Schedule, after a change the jingles come back on the playlist's next activation, e.g. from the Schedule or with the Activate button.

Default playlist

⋮ → Set as default makes a playlist the default ("Set as default!"). Careful: this also makes it active immediately and cuts the video that's playing, so the panel asks you first; click Yes to continue.

Deleting

  1. ⋮ → Delete and confirm.
  2. The playlist is deleted, not its videos.
  • The default playlist can't be deleted. To remove it, first set another one as default.
  • If you delete the active playlist, activate another one straight away so you know what will play.
  • If the playlist is used in a Schedule, check and fix the schedule.

Example: a channel with time slots

  1. Create three playlists: "Morning", "Afternoon", "Evening".
  2. Fill them from your folders with Entire folder.
  3. Switch on Shuffle in "Evening" if the order doesn't matter to you.
  4. In the Schedule, create three Playlist-type schedules, one per slot.
  5. Click Start on the Dashboard. From then on the channel changes slot on its own.
