Shoutcast or Icecast? Which one to choose
5347 viewsShoutcast and Icecast do the same job: they take your station's audio and send it to your listeners. Both play MP3 and AAC and work with all the well-known broadcasting programs and players. They differ in a few points.
Comparison
| Shoutcast | Icecast | |
|---|---|---|
| Station directory | Shoutcast Directory (directory.shoutcast.com), used by many apps and devices. Requires an AuthHash. | Not listed in the Shoutcast Directory. |
| Mount points | Works with streams (e.g. Stream #1). | Works with mount points (e.g. /stream, /live), so it's easy to have several streams or a separate stream for live broadcasting. |
| Software | Proprietary software. | Open source. |
Which one should I choose?
- Want your station in the Shoutcast Directory? Choose Shoutcast. See Shoutcast Directory: How to list my station (AuthHash).
- Want several streams or a separate mount point for live broadcasting? Icecast is more flexible.
- No special need? Both work equally well for your listeners.
Where do I change it
The server type is set in your station's panel. In Multicast Radio, for example, you change it in Stream Settings. If you can't find where it's done in your panel, open a support ticket.
If you change the server type, your stream address may change too. Check your players and apps afterwards.
