Transferring a domain to another provider: EPP code and registrar lock
6 viewsThe domain is yours and you can transfer it to any provider you like. For the transfer, the new provider will ask you for the EPP code (also called the Auth code or authorization code). You get it from the domain's page in the Client Area.
Before you start, consider: if you only want your website or email to "run" at another provider, you don't need a transfer. Just change the nameservers, and the domain stays with us.
Requirements
- The domain must be Active. If it has expired, renew it first (Expiry and renewal).
- For international extensions (.com, .net, .org etc.), a domain can't be transferred within 60 days of registration or of a previous transfer. This is a registry rule.
- The owner's email in the domain's Contact Information must be correct and one you read, because the code or confirmations may be sent there.
.gr and .ελ domains
- Go to Domains → My Domains → Manage on the domain.
- In the EPP/Transfer Code card, click Show EPP Code.
- You'll see that the EPP code link was sent to the registrant email. The code is not shown on the page: the registry sends it to the registrant email registered on the domain.
- Give the code to the new provider. A .gr transfer usually completes immediately once they submit it.
If the email doesn't arrive, check your spam folder. If the registrant email is outdated, correct it first in the Contact Information card and request the code again. A .gr transfer doesn't change the owner; for that, see Changing the owner of a .gr domain.
Other extensions (.com, .net, .eu etc.)
- On the domain page, if there's a Registrar Lock card showing Locked, click Unlock. You'll see that the lock status was updated.
- In the EPP/Transfer Code card, click Show EPP Code. The code is shown; copy it with the Copy icon.
- Start the transfer at the new provider with this code. You usually also pay there for one year of renewal, which is added to the expiry.
- You may receive a confirmation email from the registry or the new provider. Follow its instructions.
- The transfer usually takes up to 5-7 days. The website and email keep working, as long as the nameservers don't change.
Some extensions (e.g. .eu, .de, .fr, .it, .es) have no lock, so the card isn't shown; the code is enough.
After the transfer
- In My Domains the domain shows as Transferred Away and we no longer manage it. For anything, contact the new provider.
- If the domain had add-ons with us (e.g. DNS Management), they stop. If DNS was with us, make sure you set up the records at the new provider before changing nameservers.
- If you had hosting or email with us for the same domain, they carry on as normal; the nameservers just need to point to us.
Protection against unwanted transfers
The EPP code is like the key to your domain. Don't give it to anyone except the provider you're transferring to. For extensions that support it, keep the Registrar Lock on when you're not transferring, and turn on two-factor authentication on your account.
Messages and problems
| Message / Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| The action isn't allowed in the domain's current status. | The domain isn't active (e.g. it has expired). Renew it first. |
| The new provider says the code is wrong | Copy it again without spaces, or request a new code. For .gr, use the most recent code you received by email. |
| The new provider says the domain is locked | Click Unlock and wait a few minutes before trying again. |
| I can't see the EPP Code card | You're a user without the "Manage domains" permission, or the domain isn't active. Send a ticket. |
