BUTT (Broadcast Using This Tool) is a free and very simple program. It sends audio from one of your computer's inputs to your station: a microphone, a mixing desk, or the sound your computer is playing. It's the best choice if you have a mixer, if you play music from another program (e.g. RadioDJ), or if you just want to talk live.

What you need

  • A computer with Windows, macOS or Linux.
  • The DJ details from the panel: DJ Accounts → ⋮ → Connection Guide (see DJ accounts). If your package is live-only, use the details from Dashboard → Server Connection.
  • The station must be playing (Dashboard → Start).

1. Install

  1. Download BUTT from its official page danielnoethen.de/butt. Only download it from there.
  2. Install and open it. You'll see a small window with a display and the buttons ▶ (play), ■ (stop) and ● (record).

2. Add the server

  1. Click Settings.
  2. On the Main tab, in the Server section, click ADD.
  3. Fill in:
    BUTT fieldWhat to enter
NameAny name you like, e.g. "My station"
    TypeIcecast
AddressThe Server from the Connection Guide, without http:// or https://
PortThe Port from the Connection Guide
    PasswordThe DJ's password
Icecast mountpointlive (or as shown in the Connection Guide)
Icecast userThe DJ's username. Delete the default "source".
    TLS / SSLLeave it off
  4. Click ADD to save the server.
The most common mistake: leaving Icecast user as "source". The server only accepts the DJ's username. Exception: for a direct connection to the server (live-only packages) you keep "source", use mountpoint stream and the Stream Port.

3. Set up the audio

  1. On the Audio tab, under Audio Device, choose where the audio comes from:
    • the microphone or the sound card input, if you have a mixer;
    • on Windows, for the sound your computer plays, a device like "Stereo Mix" or a virtual audio device (e.g. VB-Cable).
  2. Under Channel choose Stereo.
  3. Under Streaming → Codec choose MP3, Bitrate 128 kbps (or 192 kbps with a good connection) and Samplerate 44100 Hz.

4. Show title (optional)

To let listeners see what's playing, the Stream tab has Update song name:

  • Manually: type something fixed, e.g. "Live: The Morning Show".
  • From file: BUTT reads the title from a text file, which many playout programs update by themselves.

If you don't send a title, listeners see the DJ's display name.

5. Go on air

  1. Close Settings.
  2. Click ▶. BUTT's display shows connecting... and then stream time with a running timer.
  3. On the panel's Dashboard you'll see LIVE. AutoDJ has stepped aside and listeners hear you.
  4. To end the show, click ■. Within one or two seconds AutoDJ carries on by itself.

BUTT's level meters should move when you speak or music plays. If they stay still, the Audio Device is wrong.

Recording on your computer

The ● button records the show to a file on your computer. Set the folder on the Record tab in Settings. If you'd rather record on the server, see the recording options in DJ accounts.
