Nextcloud: Syncing with your computer and phone (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone)

With the official Nextcloud apps, your files are the same on your computer, phone and browser. You'll need your Nextcloud address (e.g. https://...), as shown at the top of the service page, plus your username and password. See Nextcloud: First steps.

Computer (Windows, macOS, Linux)

  1. Download Nextcloud Desktop from nextcloud.com/install and install it.
  2. Open it and click Log in.
  3. Enter your Nextcloud address and click Next.
  4. Your browser opens. Log in and click Grant access.
  5. Back in the app, choose which folder on your computer to sync and, if you want, which folders from the cloud.

From then on, whatever you put in the folder uploads on its own, and whatever changes in the cloud downloads on its own. On Windows and macOS you can turn on virtual files: files appear in the folder but download only when you open them, so they don't take up space on your disk.

Phone (Android, iPhone, iPad)

  1. Install the Nextcloud app from Google Play or the App Store.
  2. Tap Log in and enter your Nextcloud address.
  3. Log in with your username and password and tap Grant access.

In the app you can see and open your files, upload new ones and share links. To use a file without an internet connection, mark it as available offline.

Auto upload for photos

In the app's settings, turn on Auto upload so the photos and videos on your phone upload to Nextcloud. Watch your package's space: videos fill it up quickly.

If you lose a device

The apps connect with their own key, created when you click Grant access. If a device is lost, remove it from Nextcloud: Settings → Security → Devices & sessions. See Nextcloud: Security, 2FA, app passwords and WebDAV.
