Professional Email: DNS records (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and automatic setup
8 viewsFor email to reach your Professional Email, and for the messages you send not to land in recipients' spam, your domain needs specific DNS records. You can see them on the service page, under Email Management → DNS Records (see Professional Email: First steps).
The records and what each one does
| Type | Name | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| MX | @ | Tells the internet which server receives your domain's email. Without it you don't receive email. |
| TXT (SPF) | @ | Sets which servers are allowed to send email for your domain. It starts with v=spf1. |
| TXT (DKIM) | dkim._domainkey | A digital signature on the messages you send, so the recipient knows they are genuine. |
| TXT (DMARC) | _dmarc | Tells recipients what to do with messages that fail the SPF and DKIM checks. |
| CNAME | autodiscover, autoconfig | Let Outlook, Thunderbird and phones find the settings on their own. |
Always take the exact values from the DNS Records table. The Copy button next to each row copies the value without mistakes. The DKIM value is unique to your domain.
Automatic setup (domain with DNS Management with us)
If your domain is with us and you have DNS Management active with our nameservers:
- Go to Domains → My Domains → Manage on the domain.
- Open the DNS Manager card.
- Click Auto-configure Email DNS and confirm with Yes, Configure.
All email records are written (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, autodiscover, autoconfig). They replace the matching existing records, while your other records (e.g. your website's) don't change. The button only appears if you have an active Professional Email service for the same domain. For DNS Management, see DNS Management: how to add records.
Manual setup
If your domain's DNS is elsewhere (at another registrar, on Cloudflare or in your hosting panel), add the records there one by one, copying Type, Name, Priority (MX only) and Value from the table.
- Delete your domain's old MX records. If they stay, some email will go to the old server.
- Only one SPF record. If the domain already has a TXT record starting with
v=spf1, replace it. Two SPF records cancel each other out. If you also send email from another service (e.g. a newsletter), ask us for help with a support ticket so we can combine them. - On Cloudflare, the
autodiscoverandautoconfigCNAME records must be DNS only (grey cloud), not Proxied. - Some DNS panels add the domain to the end of the name automatically. Then you type only
_dmarc, not_dmarc.yourdomain.com. For@, some panels want the field left empty.
If your website is on cPanel hosting
When your domain's email is on Professional Email but your website is on cPanel hosting, open Email Routing in cPanel, choose the domain and select Remote Mail Exchanger. Otherwise the email your website sends to your domain (e.g. a contact form) stays in cPanel and never reaches Professional Email.
How long it takes
DNS changes usually take from a few minutes to a few hours to apply everywhere. During that time some email may still go to the old server.
