Multicast Radio: Audio Processing - normalization, compressor, limiter and equalizer

Audio Processing "polishes" AutoDJ's sound while broadcasting. It brings tracks to the same volume, makes the sound fuller, protects against distortion and adjusts bass and treble. Your files don't change.
Before you start
- The page only exists on packages with AutoDJ: Streaming → Audio Processing.
- Processing is applied only to AutoDJ music (playlists, scheduled tracks, requests). It is not applied to live DJs or restreams, which are heard as they arrive.
- These are advanced settings. Wrong values can make the sound worse. If you're not sure, use a ready-made combination (Preset).
The quick way: presets
- Click Presets and choose:
Preset Best for Default 3-second crossfade and normalization at -14 LUFS. Gentle and safe. Radio Music stations: normalization, a light compressor and limiter. The sound is more even and "radio-like". Podcast Talk stations: no crossfade, normalization at -16 LUFS, compressor for a clear voice. Loud Dance stations: louder sound (-12 LUFS) and stronger compression. Disable All No processing at all: tracks sound exactly as they are. - The preset only fills in the settings. Click Save & Apply.
- In the message saying the radio will restart, click Confirm & Save.
AutoDJ restarts briefly and listeners lose the audio for a few seconds. If a DJ is broadcasting at the time, they're disconnected and need to reconnect. Make changes at a quiet time.
The settings one by one
Each section (except crossfade) has its own switch. When the switch is off, the sliders are greyed out.
Crossfade Duration
0 to 10 seconds. How much the end of one track blends into the start of the next. For music 2-4 seconds, for talk 0.
Normalization (EBU R128)
Automatically sets each track's volume so they all sound equally loud. The Target Level runs from -24 (quiet) to -6 (loud) LUFS. For most stations, -14 to -12. If you switch on only one thing on this page, make it this.
Compressor
Reduces the difference between quiet and loud passages, so the sound feels fuller, especially on phone and car speakers.
- Threshold (dB): the level above which compression starts. A lower value means more compression.
- Ratio: how strongly it compresses. 2:1 is gentle, 4:1 strong, 10:1 and above very aggressive.
- Attack / Release (ms): how quickly compression starts and stops. The presets' values are a good starting point.
Limiter
Stops the sound from going above the Ceiling (e.g. -1 dB), so it doesn't distort (clipping). Keep it on if you use the compressor or raise the volume.
Equalizer (10-band)
Ten sliders from 31 Hz (deep bass) to 16 kHz (treble), from -12 to +12 dB each. Small changes (±2-3 dB) are enough. Reset EQ sets them all back to zero.
- More "body": +2 at 63-125 Hz.
- Clearer voice: +2 at 2-4 kHz.
- Less hiss: -2 at 8 kHz.
The processing chain
The Processing Chain card shows the order the audio goes through: Source → Crossfade → Normalization → EQ → Compressor → Limiter → Output. Active stages are shown in green. The order is fixed.
Tips
- Change one thing at a time and listen to the station on a phone and on headphones.
- Louder isn't better. Too much compression tires listeners.
- If your tracks have very large differences in volume, also use Normalize all under Tracks, which fixes the files permanently.
- For live shows, processing is done in the DJ's software or mixer.
Common problems
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| The settings make no difference when the DJ is talking | Expected: processing only applies to AutoDJ music. |
| The sound "pumps" or "breathes" | The compressor is too strong. Lower the Ratio or raise the Threshold, or choose the "Radio" preset. |
| The sound distorts | Switch on the Limiter with a -1 dB Ceiling and reduce the EQ boosts. |
| "Error saving settings" | Try again. If it persists, send us a ticket with the message you saw. |
