Multicast Radio: Stream Settings - audio quality, Icecast or Shoutcast, crossfade and mount points
9 viewsApplies to: Multicast Radio. Not sure which panel you have? See Which radio or video panel do I have?
In Stream Settings you decide how your station's audio reaches listeners: quality, format, server type, the transition between tracks and extra streams. You'll also find all the connection details and listening links here.
Go to Streaming → Stream Settings. At the top right you can see whether the server is Online or Offline.
The most important thing: the Save Settings button saves your changes but doesn't apply them to the running broadcast. After saving, click Restart. Listeners lose the audio for a few seconds and most players reconnect by themselves. The only setting that applies immediately is "Disable Track Titles".
Server Type: Icecast-KH or Shoutcast 2
This is the software that delivers the audio to listeners.
- Icecast-KH (default): open source and compatible with everything. It supports extra mount points. We recommend it for most stations.
- Shoutcast 2: choose it if you need something specific to Shoutcast, e.g. a listing in the Shoutcast directory.
To change the type:
- Click Stop (the station goes off air).
- Choose Icecast-KH or Shoutcast 2. While the station is playing, the options are greyed out.
- Click Save Settings.
- Click Start.
Your listening links (Stream URL Proxy) don't change, so the players on your website keep working.
Audio Settings
Bitrate (kbps)
The broadcast quality. You only see the values your package allows.
| Bitrate | When |
|---|---|
| 64-96 kbps | Talk, listeners with slow or limited mobile internet. |
| 128 kbps | The usual choice for music radio in MP3. |
| 192-320 kbps | High quality. Each listener uses more data. |
AAC-LC at 96-128 kbps sounds roughly as good as MP3 at 128-192 kbps.
Audio Format
- MP3: the most compatible. It plays everywhere, even on old systems and car stereos.
- AAC-LC: better quality at the same bitrate. Supported by all modern browsers and phones.
- OGG: an open format. With OGG the quality is set automatically and the bitrate you choose doesn't apply. It doesn't play on all Apple devices or in streams to YouTube. If you're not sure, don't choose it.
Sample Rate and Channels
Leave 44100 Hz and Stereo. 48000 Hz offers nothing audible for radio. 22050 Hz and Mono only make sense for talk stations at very low bitrates.
Settings for packages with AutoDJ only
- Crossfade Duration (0-10 seconds, default 3): how much the end of one track blends into the start of the next. With 0, tracks change abruptly.
- Audio Normalization (EBU R128): brings all tracks to a similar volume while broadcasting, without changing the files. It's the same setting as Normalization in Audio Processing.
- Disable Track Titles: listeners see the station name instead of the track title. It applies immediately when you save.
AutoDJ Settings
The Enabled switch turns AutoDJ on or off. If you turn it off, Start only starts the server, without music, and DJ accounts can't connect. Leave it on unless you only broadcast directly with the Source Password.
Restream
This card is for permanently relaying another station. See Relaying another station.
Stream Info
Stream Name, Stream Genre(s) and Stream Website are sent along with the audio. Listeners see them in programs like VLC and in radio directories. For Shoutcast there are also:
- Directory Listing: Auto, Always Public or Always Private. It sets whether the station appears in the Shoutcast directory.
- Relay Settings: whether other servers may relay your station.
A Restart is needed for these to apply.
Listing in the Shoutcast directory (directory.shoutcast.com)
The Shoutcast directory is one of the largest internet radio directories. Many apps and devices use it (e.g. Winamp, internet radio devices). To have your station appear there:
- Click Stop and under Server Type choose Shoutcast 2.
- Under Stream Info fill in Stream Name correctly (as you want listeners to see it), Stream Genre(s) (e.g. Greek, Pop) and Stream Website.
- Under Directory Listing choose Always Public.
- Click Save Settings and then Start.
- Enter your station's AuthHash. See step by step: Multicast Radio: Listing in the Shoutcast Directory (AuthHash).
After that, the station appears in the directory while it's playing, usually within a short time. If you change it to Always Private or switch back to Icecast, it's removed from the directory.
The cards in the right-hand column
- Stream URLs: the listening links: Listener URL (direct), an M3U file for VLC and Stream URL (Proxy), which is recommended for players and apps. Server Status opens the Icecast/Shoutcast statistics page. See Connection details and listening links.
- Server Connection: Server, Port, Mount Point, Source Password and Admin Password, with regenerate buttons. After regenerating a password, click Restart and update any software that uses it.
- AutoDJ Control: Start, Stop and Restart for AutoDJ only (not the server), Reload Playlist, Next Track and View Logs. The logs are useful if you send us a ticket.
- DJ Connection: Server, Port and Mount for DJs. See DJ accounts.
- Port Allocation: your station's four ports. You only need the Stream Port and the Source Port.
Custom Mount Points (Icecast only)
An extra mount is a second stream of the same programme at a different quality. For example /mobile at 64 kbps for listeners on mobile data, next to the main /stream at 192 kbps.
- In the Custom Mount Points card, click Add.
- Enter a Mount Name: Latin letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores only, e.g.
mobile. - Choose the Format (MP3, AAC-LC, OGG) and Bitrate.
- Click Add, then Restart.
The new mount's listening link is https://server:Stream-Port/mobile, using the same Server and Stream Port you see under Server Connection. Extra mounts work while AutoDJ is playing or while DJs broadcast through a DJ account.
The buttons at the bottom
- Save Settings: you'll see "Settings saved" and the page reloads.
- Restart: applies the changes. The confirmation message warns you that listeners will be disconnected.
- Stop / Start.
What isn't set here
- The maximum number of listeners and the storage space are set by your package. You can see them under Settings → My Package.
- The track that plays when the playlist is empty is shared by all stations. To make sure it's never heard, keep tracks in your active playlist.
Common problems
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| I changed the bitrate and listeners still hear the old quality | Click Restart. |
| I can't choose Shoutcast / Icecast | Click Stop first. |
| I can't see the bitrate I want | Your package doesn't allow it. Upgrade from the Client Area. |
| "Stream is not running" on Restart | The station is stopped. Click Start. |
| "Invalid mount name. Use only letters, numbers, - and _" | The mount name contains characters that aren't allowed (e.g. Greek letters or a space). |
| "Mount point already exists" | A mount with that name already exists. |
| My YouTube stream stopped working after switching to OGG | YouTube doesn't accept OGG. Switch back to MP3 or AAC-LC and Restart. |
