Multicast Radio: Schedule - automatic playlist changes, single tracks and jingles
7 viewsApplies to: Multicast Radio. Not sure which panel you have? See Which radio or video panel do I have?
With the Schedule, your station changes what it plays by itself, depending on the time and the day. For example: easy listening in the morning, Greek music in the afternoon, dance on Saturday night, and a specific track every day at 12:00. The schedule runs on the server, so you don't need to be logged in.
Before you start
- Time zone: the schedule follows your account's time zone (Settings → Timezone). Check it first, otherwise everything will play at the wrong time. See Panel account.
- Create the playlists you'll use beforehand.
- The schedule is checked every minute, so changes happen to the minute.
The screen
Go to Streaming → Schedule.
- The green bar at the top shows what is playing now according to the schedule. If no schedule is in effect, it shows the active playlist with "(outside schedule)".
- Weekly Schedule: a Monday-to-Sunday calendar. Previous / Next change the week and Today brings you back to the current one. Click a block to edit it.
- Schedules: a list of all schedules, their times and days, with edit and delete buttons.
The four schedule types
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| Playlist | Changes the active playlist at a specific time. |
| Single Track | Plays one specific track (e.g. news, a show, a time signal), after which the playlist continues. |
| Radio Spot | Plays adverts or announcements at intervals. See Radio Spots. |
| Restream | Relays another station live for a period of time. See Relaying another station. |
Playlist schedules
- Click + New Schedule.
- Fill in:
- Name: e.g. "Morning slot".
- Color: so it stands out on the calendar.
- Type: Playlist.
- Playlist: which one will play.
- Start Time and, optionally, End Time. Without an end time, the schedule applies until the end of the day. Slots that cross midnight, e.g. 23:00 to 02:00, are allowed.
- Days: all are ticked by default. Untick the ones you don't want.
- Start Date / End Date (optional): for schedules that only apply for a period, e.g. 1/12 to 6/1 for Christmas.
- Immediate switch: if ticked, the track that's playing is cut at the switch time. Otherwise the switch happens as soon as the track ends, which sounds more natural.
- Click Save.
Jingles within the playlist
If you've marked tracks as jingles (Managing your tracks), the Jingle Options section appears:
- Select jingle: which jingle will play. With 🎲 Random Jingle, each slot gets a random one of your jingles.
- Jingle Position: At start of playlist, At end of playlist, Start and end, or Between tracks. For "Between tracks" you also set Play every X tracks (from 1 to 50). For example, 3 means a jingle after every 3 tracks.
Avoid Repetitions
- Same Artist: how many minutes (up to 180) must pass before the same artist plays again.
- Same Track: how many minutes (up to 360) before the same track plays again.
This only works if the playlist has Shuffle switched on and enough tracks from many artists. 0 means no restriction. It is applied approximately: the larger and more varied the playlist, the better the result.
Single Track schedules
- + New Schedule → Type: Single Track.
- In Track, search for and choose the track.
- Set the Start Time, Days and, if you like, dates.
- Repeat: with 0 the track plays once a day. With e.g. "Every 2 hours" it plays again every two hours while the start-to-end window is in effect.
- If you want a jingle (e.g. a news ident), choose it in Select jingle (or 🎲 Random Jingle) and in Jingle Position pick At start of playlist (before the track), At end of playlist (after) or Start and end.
- Save.
The track is queued and plays as soon as the current track ends, so it may start a few minutes after the time you set. Then the playlist continues where it left off. While a DJ is live, single tracks don't play.
Once the track has played, the schedule list shows a green Played today badge. To play it again the same day, click the yellow Reset to play again button.
For an exact time (e.g. news at exactly 12:00), use a Radio Spot with "Specific time" and Interrupt current track ticked.
What happens when schedules overlap
When several schedules apply at the same time (apart from Radio Spots, which work independently), these rules apply:
- A Restream that is in effect always wins.
- Otherwise the schedule that started most recently wins, i.e. the one with the latest start time.
- Priority (0 to 100) only matters when two schedules start at exactly the same time. Then the higher number wins.
- A DJ broadcasting live is always heard, whatever the schedule says.
When a schedule ends
When a Playlist schedule ends, the station doesn't go back by itself to the previous playlist; it carries on with the playlist of the schedule that ended. That's why we recommend a "base" schedule covering the whole day:
- Create a Playlist schedule called "Base music" with Start Time 00:00, no end time, every day.
- Create your special schedules (e.g. "Morning slot" 07:00-10:00) with start and end times.
At 07:00 "Morning slot" wins, because it started more recently. At 10:00, when it ends, only "Base music" applies, and the station returns to it automatically.
If you have a schedule that crosses midnight (e.g. 23:00-02:00), after midnight it counts as starting at 00:00, just like the base schedule. Give it a higher Priority than the base (e.g. 10) so it still wins after 00:00.
Switching playlist by hand while a schedule is running
If you activate another playlist (from Playlists, Studio or the DJ Mixer) while a Playlist schedule is in effect, the system switches back to the schedule's playlist within about a minute. For a one-off different show, create a schedule whose start and end dates are the same day.
Editing and deleting
Click the block on the calendar or the pencil in the list to make changes, and the bin to delete. Schedules have no "pause" switch. To stop a schedule temporarily, set an End Date that has already passed, or delete it.
Common problems
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Everything plays one or two hours early or late | Wrong time zone. Fix it in Settings. |
| After a schedule ends, the same playlist carries on | Add the "base" schedule from 00:00, as explained above. |
| Two schedules overlap and the "wrong" one plays | The one with the later start time wins. Change the times so they don't overlap, or give them the same start time and a higher Priority. |
| The single track didn't play | A DJ was live at that time, the station was stopped, or that day wasn't ticked. |
| I can't see the Jingle Options section | You haven't marked any track as a jingle. |
| "Select at least one day" | Tick at least one day. |
